WiFi experiences in Japan
Well, I’m now back, and mostly recovered from a week travelling in Japan.
WiFi in Japan was less widespread than I’d expected: it’s in the process of being rolled out at Shinkansen stations: Tokyo had it and Kyoto is imminent, although I was at neither station long enough to log-in. Narita airport has a hotspot in terminal 2, but only in the executive lounge, and it looks very much like a trial service with little promotion (although it does offer access for iPass and Gric users).
In fact, the only time I accessed the Internet in Japan was on my first two nights where the Tokyo ryokan I was staying at had wired access in every room. As I had fast online access morning and evening I felt no desire to use WiFi during the day, especially given the 8 hour time difference with Europe. For WiFi hotspots to be a success people must want access on the move. In Japan hotel Internet access alone met my needs.
